It’s one thing to find out your battery has died while you’re trying to take your ATV out the garage and it’s a completely different nightmare to have it die while you’re off-roading. This is why ATV owners, and vehicle owners in general, purchase a Powersports Lifetime Battery Program; to have coverage for immediate battery replacement.

Reviving a dead battery

Many first-time ATV owners wonder if there is a way to revive their dead battery, and the answer is yes; there is a way to bring a dead battery back to life. But be reminded that a revived battery may not work at full capacity anymore, so it’s best to have it checked as soon as you get back from your off-roading trip.

As for reviving a dead ATV battery, there are a few ways and they’re pretty much the same way as you would a dead car battery, shares premier Powersports Lifetime Battery Program provider Torque Group. The most common and go-to way to revive a dead battery is to jumpstart it. Here’s how:

Jumpstarting a dead battery

Jumpstarting your ATV basically involves another ATV, but one with a working battery. You connect the good battery with the dead battery with cables (a red cable and a black cable), and then you let the good battery start first and sit idle for a couple of minutes to warm it up. After a while, start the ATV with the dead battery. Once you have your ATV running, disconnect the batteries by removing the red cable first and then the black one from the revived battery. Do the same with the good battery, removing the red cable wire first.

If there are no other ATVs around, you could still jumpstart your ATV with a car. Bear in mind, however, that a car battery is way stronger than an ATV battery, which means you could potentially “fry” your ATV battery if you turn on the car battery. What you should do instead is to leave the car off and only turn on your ATV. Once your dead battery is revived, disconnect the cables from both batteries following the same procedure mentioned above.

If the problem was the battery, you shouldn’t run into any issues jumpstarting your ATV. If it doesn’t start, however, there could be other problems that caused the ATV to stop running. Contact your trusted mechanic immediately to have it checked.
