Sporting a combination of speed, power, and beauty, motorcycles continue to be highly sought after by powersports enthusiasts and people who simply need an alternative to cars. It’s no surprise motorcycle thefts remain rampant—an issue total loss protection programs aim to safeguard motorcyclists from.
The fact of the matter is motorbikes are far easier to steal than larger modes of transportation. A thief doesn’t need to start a motorcycle and drive it away to steal it; they simply need to haul or lift it into a van, where all evidence of the theft disappears. This also explains why it’s more difficult for the police to recover stolen bikes than stolen cars.
In 2018, nonprofit organization National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) released a report detailing motorcycle theft and recovery trends between 2014 and 2018. The statistics, some of which we’ve shared below, are quite alarming.
2014 saw 42,856 motorcycle thefts. This rose to 45,555 in 2015, then 46,467 in 2016. The number of cases decreased to 44,268 in 2017.
The decline in motorcycle thefts between 2017 and 2018 is encouraging. Nevertheless, this period only saw 39% of stolen motorcycles recovered, a value lower than that reported in 2016.
In a 2019 report, the NICB revealed that the 5 states with the most cases of motorcycle theft in 2018 were:
- California: 7,035 thefts
- Florida: 4,279
- Texas: 3,073
- New York: 1,777
- South Carolina: 1,743
The 5 motorcycle brands most targeted by thieves were:
- American Honda Motor Company, Inc.: 8,260
- Yamaha Motor Corporation: 6,655
- American Suzuki Motor Corporation: 4,882
- Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A.: 4,861
- Harley-Davidson, Inc.: 4,769
