When SUVs first came out, they were generally used for off-roading but over the years, their designs have changed so much so that they’re now regarded more as on-road than off-road vehicles. Can you use a regular SUV for off-roading?
If you’re wondering if a regular, modernized version of SUVs from long ago can be used for off-highway driving, then the short answer is yes, but there are factors that still need to be considered if you were to safely drive on off-the-highway roads.
First of all, SUVs that you usually see on off-road tracks have been modified, which is why you’d often see a version of your on-road SUV with more ground clearance, higher seats, and bigger, beefier tires.
Secondly, if you’re thinking of an SUV for off-roading, then you’d have to go for the 4WD model rather than the usual 2WD type. You’d want a 4WD model as this gives you more traction and more control of the vehicle, particularly on muddy or slippery tracks.
As for how much off-roading you can do on a regular, 2WD SUV, the answer is not much. If you’re driving on the highway and you suddenly have to get off the road and drive on muddy terrain or a dirt path, then you can safely do so on your SUV but you’d have to get back on the highway as soon as you can.
In other words, if your purpose is to go off-roading on your vehicle, then you’d have to make sure your SUV was designed for it. Consider a Land Rover Defender or Chevrolet Tahoe, or Jeep Grand Cherokee.
